How we work it out
One person with salary only and no dependants. Canada follows the CRA's 2026 payroll formulas: federal and provincial tax, CPP or QPP (including the second tier), EI, and QPIP in Quebec. Ontario includes the surtax, the Ontario Health Premium and the low-income credits. The Northwest Territories and Nunavut include their 2% payroll tax.
The US uses the 2026 IRS brackets with the standard deduction, Social Security and Medicare (with the extra 0.9% over $200,000 single or $250,000 joint), state income tax, and the employee payroll programs in states that have them, such as California SDI or New Jersey's disability and family leave insurance.
What is simplified
- No pre-tax savings (RRSP, pension plans, 401(k), HSA) and no child credits.
- New York's high-income recapture is estimated. Connecticut's top-income recapture is left out.
- Local taxes cover the main ones only (New York City, Yonkers, Philadelphia, Maryland and Indiana counties, Detroit, Kansas City, St. Louis, and large Ohio cities).
- The US covers 31 states: those with large pharma and biotech hubs, plus the states with no income tax.
- Small low-income credits in some provinces are not included.
Rates are updated every January, and when a government changes them during the year.
